Clinical Study of Inflammatory Disease of Large Intestine


Abstract
This clinical study is a statistical observation and review of 31 cases of inflammatory disease of larger intestine, who were treated surgically during the period from 1953 to 1972 at St. Mary¡¯s Hospital.
The following results were obtained.
1) The causative disease producing-inflammation of larger intestine were colon tuberculosis (51.6%); amebic colitis (32.3%), ulcerative colitis (12.9%), and diverculitis (3.2%) in order of frequency. .
2) The age and sex incidence of inflammatory disease of larger intestine a greater prevalence, in male and 3rd decade, with a ratio of 1.2: 1.
3) The clinical manifestations were abdominal pain (87. 1%), diarrhea (38.7%), nausea and vomiting (38.7%), fever and abdominal mass.
4) The pre-operative correct diagnosis was established in 16.1% of all cases.
5) The lesions of colon tuberculosis, amebic colitis and diverculitis were more frequently in cecum and ascending colon, but ulcerative colitis located in sigmoid colon and descending colon mostly.
6) The post-operative complications were 48.4/ (15 cases), which were mostly wound infection, anastomotic failure, intestinal obstruction, malfunction of colostomy in order of frequency.
7) The post-operative mortality was 3.2%(1 case), and cause of death was sepsis in ameboma.
